With the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final underway, India won the toss and chose the first field. In the first bowling, the Indian team got off to a great start with Mohammed Siraj scoring an early strike and sending veteran batsman Usman Khawaja out for a duck.
Australia, however, stabilized the inning thanks to excellent shots from Steve Smith and Travis Head. Australia came back strong despite a bad start to the inning due to Khawaja’s ejection.
Kawaja saw his bat tickle slightly before being driven back into the pavilion by Siraj in one four over and the throw landed straight into the hands of wicketkeeper KS Bharat.
Seeing Kawaja’s sacking, former Australian cricketer Justin Langer, who was on air at the time, suggested that Kawaja’s sacking may have been because he was wearing a long-sleeved sweater.
“He came out wearing a long-sleeved sweater. Especially in the early days, he wanted to wear a long-sleeved sweater. I came out in this long-sleeve sweater and he’d be disappointed if I missed the first half hour,” Justin Langer said during the broadcast.
India scored 151 points at the end of the second day. Great shots from
Smith and Heads and a late push from Alex Carey saw Australia score his 469 runs. The Australian also put in a sensational performance with the ball.
India got off to a dismal start when Shubman Gill and captain Rohit Sharma were knocked out early on. In addition, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli were also sacked on the cheap. Experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeha had some great shots under pressure. The 34-year-old scored 48 runs in 51 deliveries.
Azinkya Rahane and KS Bharat were on the sidelines when Stump was called on the second day. Rahane went unbeaten with 29 runs in 71 deliveries while Bharat went unbeaten with 5* runs.
